Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is a glacier created lake which is 24 kilometers long. It is located 15 minutes from the town of Banff, in Banff National Park (MAP). Fishing is very popular on this lake and I personally recomend fishing near the north end, right in the middle and go deep down. Downriggers really help on this lake. Boat rentals are available at the marina. The marina also offers a tackle shop. Lake trout and Rocky Mountain Whitefish are the main catch at this lake. I have seen some big Lakers come out of this lake and I have never left Minnewanka empty handed. The lake also offers interpretive boat tours, hiking trails and guided walks with park naturalists. The lake has a boat launch on the southwest side of the lake and cannot be overlooked when you first enter the Minnewanka Loop. I personally like to set up my line with a Pickerel Rig and use a pair of fairly large smelts for bait. I usually catch the big Lake Trouts at a depth between 200 and 300 meters.
